Some mornings on the farm stop you cold. Not because anything is wrong. Because everything is right. The sky turns colors you did not know existed. Orange bleeding into red bleeding into something that does not have a name. And if you are lucky enough to be sitting in your office with your coffee and your journal when it happens, you just stop. You put the pen down. And you watch.
That is exactly what happened the morning Second Sunrise was born.
The Morning Everything Went Quiet
I was doing what I do most mornings. Devotions, prayer, journaling. The kind of quiet that takes a little discipline to protect but is worth every bit of the fight to keep it. And then the sky happened.
We have a flag out on the property. It was just sitting there in that light, and something about that image stopped me completely. I was not thinking about songs or albums or anything creative at all. I was just present. Quiet. Taking it in.
And then two words dropped into my heart.
Second sunrise.
I could not shake them. Not that morning, not that afternoon, not that evening. They just stayed with me the way things do when they are meant to become something. At first I thought it would be a devotion. But when I called Daron and said these two words out loud, he heard it the same way I did.
This is more than a devotion. This is a song.
What a Second Sunrise Really Means
Here is what I know about second chances at life after loss. They do not announce themselves. They do not come with a warning or a bow or a clean timeline. They just show up one morning in the middle of your ordinary routine and ask if you are paying attention.
Daron lost his first wife to cancer. Seventeen years of marriage, two children, a whole life built together, and then she was gone. That kind of loss does not just break your heart. It reshapes everything. The way you see mornings. The way you hold the people in front of you. The way you understand time.
And I had my own losses. A marriage that ended. Dreams that did not survive the season I was in. Years of rebuilding from scratch and wondering if the life I had imagined was still possible for someone like me.
We both came to each other carrying things. And what we found together was not a return to what we had lost. It was something entirely new. A second sunrise. Not the same sky. A better one.
What the Song Says
Second Sunrise is an upbeat song. That matters. Because this is not a grief song. It is a gratitude song. It is about waking up and choosing to see the gift in front of you instead of the loss behind you.
The bridge is the line that gets me every time. It talks about how sometimes love does not show you what matters until something is taken away. That painful, honest truth that loss gives you a perspective you cannot get any other way. Daron carries that perspective every single day. Having loved someone and lost her, he does not take a single morning for granted.
That is what I wanted to capture. Not just the beauty of a second chance at life after loss but the weight behind it. The awareness that comes from having held something precious and watched it go.
Every sunrise is a new beginning. But when you have stood in the dark long enough, you never see the sunrise the same way again.
Why I Needed to Slow Down and Write It
Finding hope after loss and heartbreak is not something that happens on a schedule. It happens in the quiet. In the early mornings. In the moments you almost miss because life is moving too fast and your to-do list is too long and you have forgotten to look up.
Second Sunrise is our reminder to look up.
To slow down and stop managing life from a distance and actually live it. To sit with your coffee and watch the sky do something extraordinary and let yourself feel grateful instead of rushing past it to the next thing.
We get one life. And every single morning we wake up, we are handed another chance to live it well. That is not small. That is everything.
The Scripture Behind It
Lamentations 3:22-23 has been close to my heart through every hard season.
His mercies are new every morning. Great is his faithfulness.
Every morning. Not just the easy ones. Not just the ones where the sky is orange and gorgeous and everything feels right. Every morning is a new mercy. A new chance. A second sunrise showing up whether you feel ready for it or not.
That is the theology underneath this song. Jesus does not run out of new beginnings for the people who belong to him. He just keeps making them available. Every single day. All the way to the end.

The Song Is Out Now
Second Sunrise is part of Daron’s new project, country music rooted in the real stories of his life with deep faith woven all the way through. This is the first time he has released music like this, songs that tell his story, and it is so worth your time.
Go listen right now. Wherever you stream and download music, you can find it there.
And then share it. Because somebody in your life needs this reminder today. Somebody needs to know that finding hope after loss and heartbreak is not just possible. It is waiting for them in the very next sunrise.
And do not miss the morning and your own Second Sunrise.
