Being in an intimate relationship is a human need and one that helps us to become connected to others. The feeling of love can improve mental and physical health which is why so many people crave it. If you’re already in a relationship, it’s normal to go through lull times.
The stronger your relationship is, the less likely it is to go through testing times. There are many things you can do to strengthen your relationship. Take a look at these top tips.
Build A Friendship
All the best relationships start with friendship. The foundation of a relationship should be based on how well you know your partner. Spend time talking with each other and find out about likes and dislikes.
Listen to one another and act as each other’s sound boards so you both know where to turn when you need advice. Think about how you treat your friends and how they treat you. Show your partner the same love and respect.
Spend Time Together
It may sound obvious but many people neglect to prioritize time with their partners. You can’t strengthen a relationship without making time for it. Set time aside each week to eat alone together or go on a date. Another great idea is to make a bucket list of ways you can spend quality time together.
This gives you quality time where you can focus entirely on your relationship and nothing else. When you get into the habit of putting your relationship above other things, it will soon become something you do without even thinking.
Get Into The Same Things
It’s normal for couples to have individual interests. For instance, your partner might like to hit the gym while you dive into a new book at home. However, it’s important to find some common ground and do things you both enjoy together.
If you both like board games, try having a game night once a month. One of our favorite games to play together is Sequence. Finding a TV series to watch together is also a great idea. We love to take turns picking different shows and series that we can watch together on the weekends and before bedtime. Here’s where to watch game of thrones Australia.
Stay Intimate
Being physical with your partner is a must for a strong relationship. When couples lead busy lives, it’s easy to keep putting intimacy on the back burner. The problem is, a lack of physical affection can lead to one or both partners feeling neglected.
If you haven’t been making time for intimacy recently, it’s time to put sex back at the top of your priority list. It will make both of you feel more loved and it can help to improve physical health.
Champion Each Other
Are you championing your partner? Does your partner feel supported by you? When you’re in a relationship with someone you should be their biggest fan.
Encourage them to do well and help to pick them up when they fall down. As a team, it’s easier to tackle life goals together. Keep being your partner’s cheerleader.
Communicate Well
All couples have disagreements but that doesn’t mean they all have to end in fights. Couples who communicate well with each other can avoid fighting by maturely talking about their feelings. Each partner should feel validated and each partner should be able to forgive and move on.
Avoid talking about a disagreement for longer than necessary. The longer you disagree, the more likely it is to escalate into something nasty. Say what you need to say and then spend time alone until you’re both in a calmer mind frame.
Couples Therapy
There should never be any shame in admitting you need some help with issues in your relationship. Couples therapy is an ideal way to work through some of these issues with a professional. It can help to have an unbiased voice to help the relationship move forward in the right direction.
It can take time for both partners to feel comfortable with the idea of going to couples therapy. It can also take time for each partner to open up and be truthful about how they feel. That being said, the results can do wonders for relationships.
Maintain Your Individuality
As important as it is to be committed to your partnership, it’s just as important not to lose yourself within it. You need to be true to yourself and confident in who you are. You can’t be part of a partnership if you don’t know yourself.
Avoid becoming too dependent on your relationship and continue to push yourself out of your comfort zone to achieve personal goals.
