Today, I’m sharing 9 Scriptures for Overcoming Rejection. Rejection is something we all face throughout our lives. Whether it’s from family, friends, or people we don’t even know, it can be difficult to overcome. If we’re not careful, those rejecting words and actions can stay in our hearts for weeks, months, or even years.

9 Scriptures for Overcoming Rejection

If we allow it to, rejection can affect so many aspects of our lives. We may start to question ourselves, or think we’re not good enough, smart enough, attractive enough – the list goes on and on. I’ve definitely been there, and chances are, you have too.

Why Bible Scripture Can Help with Overcoming Rejection

The Bible is full of stories about rejection. It’s something Jesus Himself dealt with, and it ultimately led to his death for us on the cross. As he was dying, he even cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). That sounds a lot like the pain of rejection to me! The truth is, Jesus accepted that rejection and pain for us, so we could be in relationship with him and the Father. Because he was fully man and fully God, he knows what rejection feels like on a human-level.

Matthew 27:46

When you consider everything he went through for us, it becomes clear that we should really look to him on how we should respond. He went through all the same things we go through, and he did it to bring redemption and grace to it all.

Philippians 4:18

“And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.”

This is one of my favorite scriptures for overcoming rejection. This verse comes from the Apostle Paul, who knew that God was trustworthy through it all. It doesn’t mean we won’t experience hardships of any kind, but it means that God will help us overcome them. He is there every step of the way and will supply what we need when we need it, even when it doesn’t make sense on the surface.

Psalms 27:10

“Even if my father and mother abandon me, the LORD will hold me close.”

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what people think of us. It only matters what God thinks, and He promises to be there when others fail us. While it can be hard to face rejection from others, remember that He is the same today, yesterday, and tomorrow.

romans 8:31

“What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?”

This is another verse from Paul. Because Christ has interceded for us, no charge or complaint made against us can stand. It’s important to remember that not everything everyone says about you is true. We need to dig deep and ask for discernment to know the difference between constructive criticism and hurtful, untrue words.

John 15:18

“If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.”

9 Scriptures for Overcoming Rejection

Those are powerful words, and a great reminder that we can run to Jesus when we feel rejected. As mentioned before, he really did experience all the highs and lows of humanity, and is a perfect example of how we should strive to be in the face of adversity.

Scriptures for Overcoming Rejection: Matthew 10:14

“If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave.”

Jesus was telling the apostles here that if their message was rejected, to move on. In a modern way, this verse should remind us to not “carry” anything from those who reject the message of Christ. At some point, we need to come to the realization that people have made up their minds. Whether what they say or do is true, it may be best to move on and let it be.

proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

Proverbs 3:5-6

Rejection will definitely hurt. However, this verse reminds me that rejection is God’s protection! Maybe that person, job, or friend group isn’t right for you. We have to trust that God has it under control, even when we feel disappointed.

Matthew 5:44

“But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!”

This one is tough – especially when we’re hurting. But, God does call on us to pray for those who have rejected us! We may not like to hear this, but God loves the person who rejected you just as much as He loves you. We are called to be like Him, which means that we pray for their good, even if they are doing the opposite for us.

romans 15:13

“I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope.”

Romans 15:13

I pray this for you and myself as well. I pray that we are so full of God’s goodness and peace, that rejection doesn’t even phase us when it comes our way! That we’re filled with confidence and joy no matter our circumstances.

2 Corinthians 4:9

“We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God.”

This world and its people will try to break us, and without God, we are easily broken. However, by God’s strength, we are better able to bend instead of shatter. Even the strongest of us is weak, but God uses our weakness for His glory!

Scriptures for overcoming rejection: The Challenge

Will you choose to trust God in the face of rejection? Even when it stings, I turn to these verses to remember how much rejection Jesus faced and what we can learn from his experience. There are also many other stories of rejection in the Bible we could look to, for example, what the apostles faced before and after Jesus’ death, and Joseph being sold into slavery by his own brothers.
