We have a favorite dessert at the Farmer House and it’s called Butter Pie, also known as ooey gooey butter cake. I took this beloved recipe and used it as a base for a delicious new combination made with velvety Nutella and chocolate chips. Like most families, we’re constantly on-the-go, so I’ve taken advantage of using a store-bought cake mix and dressed it up into this Ooey Gooey Nutella Bars recipe. Doesn’t the name alone make you want to preheat the oven and get baking?!

What Ingredients are in Ooey Gooey Nutella Bars?

These Nutella Chocolate Chip bars come together easily with the help of a boxed cake mix and stand mixer.  Most of these items are readily available in my pantry making it a quick recipe to make.  You can also use a regular electric hand mixer if you prefer.  Here is the full list of ingredients for your grocery list:

  • Chocolate fudge or dark chocolate cake mix
  • Eggs
  • Butter
  • Chocolate chips
  • Cream cheese
  • Nutella
  • Vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar
  • Optional: fresh strawberries for topping

How to Make Ooey Gooey Nutella Chocolate Chip Bars:

These Nutella Bars are basically made in two easy steps. First, we make the base using the chocolate cake mix. Then, we make the filling and layer it on top of the base before baking.

To Make the Base:

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.

Spray a 13×9 inch baking pan with non-stick cooking oil or spray and set aside.

In a medium size bowl, combine dry cake mix, 1 egg, melted butter and blend with an electric mixer, or in a stand mixer.  Gently fold in the chocolate chips.

Ingredients In Mixer Bowl

Remove mixture from bowl and press it into bottom of pan.

To Make Ooey Gooey Nutella Bars Filling:

Mix the softened cream cheese, eggs, Nutella, and vanilla in a medium-sized bowl until smooth.

Ingredients in Mixer

Slowly add powdered sugar in ½ cup increments and beat until creamy and smooth.

Gently fold in the chocolate chips.

Using a spatula, spread the filling over the cake.

Nutella Bars Layer 2

Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the edges are brown. It’s important to not over bake as you want the center to be a little gooey.

Allow the cake to cool before dusting lightly with powdered sugar.

Finished Bars with Powdered Sugar

Cut the cake into rectangular bars or square brownie shapes for multiple guests.
