My favorite treat when we take the kids to a carnival is a corn dog. I recreated them at home with my Healthy Baked Corn Dogs recipe. I use all-natural beef or turkey hot dogs and a homemade cornmeal batter that gets slightly crunchy in the oven. Hot sauce gives the batter a little kick against the sweetness of the cornmeal. My kids love when Healthy Baked Corn Dogs are for dinner, because they feel like it’s a treat without knowing they are secretly healthier than traditional corndogs!

What are the Health Benefits of Baking Corn Dogs?

Typically, a corn dog is a beef or pork hot dog that is dipped in a sweet cornmeal batter and deep fried until golden brown. Deep frying adds fat, calories, and oil into our diet unnecessarily. I have also eliminated most sugar from the batter, and only use 1/2 tablespoon in the whole dish. My dish uses turkey hot dogs, which is leaner and lower in fat than a beef or pork frank. By making a few changes, we have a dish that is healthy enough for a weeknight family meal.

Baked corn dogs versus deep fried corn dogs have so many additional positive health benefits. Any fattening dish can be made healthy with a little imagination! For more healthy, updated recipes, try my Twice Baked Sweet Potatoes.

Ingredients for Healthy Baked Corn Dogs

Corn Dog Ingredients

  • yellow cornmeal
  • white whole wheat flour
  • sugar (or substitute your favorite sweetener)
  • baking soda
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • paprika
  • hot sauce
  • low-fat buttermilk
  • turkey hot dogs or real angus beef hot dogs

How to Make Healthy Baked Corn Dogs

Preheat the oven to 375ºF and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or spray with nonstick cooking spray. In a large bowl, mix all of the batter ingredients together until the batter comes together.

Batter for Corn Dog

Insert a Popsicle stick in each hot dog, leaving about 2 inches at the bottom to hold. Hold the end of the Popsicle stick and spoon the batter all over the hot dog in the batter bowl, coating all sides. Allow the excess batter to drip back into the bowl.

Battering the Hot Dog

With the back of the spoon, scrape the back end of the hot dog so there is only a thin layer of batter on the side being placed down on the baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until evenly browned.
