Do I have to add icing to these oven baked donuts?

When you are making these oven-baked donuts, they are perfect straight from the oven. I make a cream cheese icing glaze that I love to dip the donuts in but they can certainly be made and enjoyed without the glaze. If you are passing on this glaze because you are worried about the calories and the points, the donut with glaze is only 5 points and 121 calories.

Can I add chocolate chips to this red velvet donuts recipe?

Chocolate and red velvet are the perfect matches for a breakfast sweet. Cocoa is one of the main flavors in red velvet foods, so you know you will have a nice chocolate base, but if you want more, chocolate chips are a great addition. This addition will only add a few more calories per serving, so not something to worry about in calculations of nutrition.

Tip: You could even add white chocolate or dark chocolate chips for variety!

How to keep red velvet donuts fresh

When you make donuts, the best way to keep them fresh is to store them properly.  If you don’t think you will be eating the whole batch right away, then it is best to find a good airtight container to store them in until later.  They are safe on the counter in a container for 2-3 days.  If you aren’t able to finish them before that time, you’ll need to place them in the refrigerator where they will be good for up to one week.

These donuts can be frozen, but are best freshly made.  If you freeze them, you will need to wrap or store them in a freezer storage bag that has been dated and labeled.

Pro Tips

  • If you’re worried about removing the donuts from the donut pan, don’t be! An easy way is to loosen the edges and pop them out with a straight-edged spatula.
  • There will be extra glaze that you will not need — however, you need “more” than necessary in order to get a good dip.
