Apple Pie Oatmeal
Apple pie is one of my favorite desserts, so making that flavor come to life in a healthy breakfast was definitely a must. Using the slow cooker for steel-cut oats has been a life-changer. Not only do I get a much better texture, but I can set these up at night and let them cook slowly overnight so they are piping hot first thing in the morning.

Do I Have to Use Steel-Cut Oats?
While the texture of steel-cut oats holds up better in the slow cooker than rolled oats, you can substitute them if desired. I would not recommend using quick oats of any kind as they would likely be much mushier and not as appetizing to eat. Instead, use rolled oats or steel-cut for the best results.
Have extra oats? You can use them to make this oatmeal stuffed baked apples recipe for another sweet treat or breakfast idea.
What are the Best Apples for Apple Pie Oatmeal?
I have used a variety of apples in this recipe. Since it cooks down overnight, you can really use any apple you have on hand. For more texture, I would stick with a Granny Smith, Jonagold, or Macintosh as they are sturdier. If you don’t mind it being a bit mushier after cooking, then a Gala, Fuji, or even Honeycrisp would work.
Can I Make These on the Stovetop?
Steel-cut oats take around 30-minutes to cook on the stovetop. This apple pie oatmeal recipe definitely cooks down the apples more when placed int he slow cooker, but if you have time to tend them and want them right away, the stovetop method can be successful. Just know that oats will stick and burn easily, so this is not a recipe you can step away from while it cooks.
